Between Melancholy and Motion: Dancing Through the Storm
Indila’s “Dernière Danse”: Sometimes all it takes is a haunting voice and a good beat to lift the fog
Indila, born Adila Sedraïa on June 26, 1984, in Paris, is a French singer and songwriter. Of Algerian, Indian, Cambodian, and Egyptian descent, she describes herself as a “child of the world.” Before launching her solo career, she worked as a tour guide at the Marché international de Rungis and wrote songs for other artists.
Indila rose to fame in 2013 with her breakout single "Dernière danse," which topped the charts in several countries and reached over one billion views on YouTube by December 2023—a milestone for a French-language song. Her debut album, "Mini World" (2014), was awarded diamond status in France.
After the success of Mini World, she stepped back from the public eye to protect her artistic freedom. In 2019, she returned with the single "Parle à ta tête" and announced a second album, which has yet to be released.
I like her emotive work, and sometimes I need some Pop and good dance moves to feel happy.
Here are the lyrics of Dernière Danse:
Ô ma douce souffrance
Pourquoi s'acharner ? Tu r'commences
Oh, my sweet suffering
Why be so cruel? You start again
I’m just a soul of no importance
Without him, I feel slightly insane
I wander alone in the subway
One last dance
To forget my deep sorrow
I want to flee, to start all over
Oh, my sweet suffering
I stir the sky, the day, the night
I dance with the wind, the rain
A little love, a drop of honey
And I dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance
And in the noise, I run and I fear
Is it my turn? The pain comes near
Across all Paris, I lose myself
And I fly, fly, fly, fly, fly, fly, fly
So much hope
On this path in your absence
Though I try, without you
My life’s just a glowing stage, empty of meaning
I stir the sky, the day, the night
I dance with the wind, the rain
A little love, a drop of honey
And I dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance
And in the noise, I run and I fear
Is it my turn? The pain draws near
Across all Paris, I lose myself
And I fly, fly, fly, fly, fly, fly, fly
In this sweet suffering
For which I’ve paid every price
Listen how vast my heart is
I am a child of the world
I stir the sky, the day, the night
I dance with the wind, the rain
A little love, a drop of honey
And I dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance
And in the noise, I run and I fear
Is it my turn? The pain appears
Across all Paris, I lose myself
And I fly, fly, fly, fly, fly, fly, fly
Here’s to your emotional independence.
