➔ How Substack Notes Work and How Restacking Affects the Algorithm - In the chat with Writers @ Work by Sarah Fay, we discussed how restacking helps others and yourself and that liking a note is not the same as restacking it.➔ I wrote this today (January 30, 2025): Substack Notes is a social feed within Substack that allows writers and readers to share short posts (similar to tweets or LinkedIn posts). Notes can be used for various purposes, such as sharing thoughts, linking to Substack or external content, sparking discussions, or engaging with other writers and readers.
Hi there, I have posted the following note today because I am under the impression that I can assist some of you:
DIGITAL & GRAPHICAL TOOLS | ASSISTANCE FOR WRITERS & CREATORS
In the chat with Writeres@Work by Sarah Fey, Substack Writers at Work, we discussed two days ago how restacking helps others and yourself and that liking a note is not the same as restacking it.
Since I am a Digital Girl, I would like to know if you need any assistance with digital tools. Let me ask you some questions:
Is that you?
How can you fine-tune your site on Substack?
How can you put up Sections?
What do you think about customizing the Homepage?
How can you design your graphics?

Please read and restack this note if you find it useful.
Super! You are the first one! Did you subscribe? I will also give you insight to Canva. You will love it. It can be so much fun to do your own graphics.
Yes, I subscribed — I’ve been looking for this kind of resource to explain this dynamic platform… and love that now I love that I’ll have a community of curious learners to be a part of.
Nice that you are allowing us to preview before paying.
I’m especially curious to share & learn more about chatGPT for us substack writers. I’ve been using it to craft my writing.
Lovely. You got my message in the chat, right? I did make a note on this post today, but I am sure I will restack it again soon. Thank you for subscribing.
Oh, dear Yolanda, thank you for your input. I did make a note today. Hopefully, it gets out to the people. As I said, I did a lot of thinking about the matter.
Interesting, thanks for this. My experience is that the algorithm seems to change so often that it's hard to follow the 'mood' of the algorithm. A month ago, a video with some text got nowhere, but a short story was popular. Now, a video with short text works well. I have no idea what will be trending next month. For growth, be active on notes, for deepening connections with subscribers go for the chat. I have been trying both now, resulting in follower and free-subscriber growth via notes and a growing community of core supporters in the chat.
😂 Mood is the right word for it. While you have Hashtags on LinkedIn or Instagram, I agree that on substack, these three things only work: be active on notes, interact on chats, and get in touch with other people. I like the last the best.
A good round up! I am still not sure whether I should simply restack or restack with a note - Sarah says to restack only, but I like to comment or highlight an aspect of the restacked note .....
If you restack and add your own note, it becomes your Notes - so if your followers do a like, comment or restack, they would do these actions on YOUR notes, and you will benefit from the network effect.
If you only restack it will still be the Notes of the original poster. All actions will be on the original note.
There is a subtle difference, it depends on what your intention is. If you want to help with the original poster I suggest just do restack.
That really was super helpful and CLEAR! I look forward to mrs insights as i do find navigating the platform very time consuming and challenging. Don’t really mind the challenge but do resent the time as it could be better spent writing!

I second what Chris suggested: do a note on this post!!
Oh, dear Yolanda, thank you for your input. I did make a note today. Hopefully, it gets out to the people. As I said, I did a lot of thinking about the matter.
That was great, but I should've been more clear so that I could've saved you some work: I meant just restack your post (it turns into a Note)! 🤣
Right. Silly me. 🙄🤦♀️ That is the easiest way. 😂

Great post, Silke.
You might want to edit and corret Sarah's name... it's Fay, not Fey. Hope you don't mind me saying.
😀
Not at all! Thank you for seeing it! So you know, I corrected it already. Thank you so much.
Just subscribed! I need your tips.
Yeah!!! Super! I am so happy that you joined. See you on Sunday!
Well said, Silke! I agree with you that it's fine to restack outside our own subject area for just the reasons you describe.
Thank you for your insight, dear Tara.

Thank you so much. As someone new to Substack I found that really helpful x
Thank you, dear Donna. I am new on Substack, too. But I am a digital tech girl, so I am always eager to learn how things work.

I am happy. Love that so much I could be of help.
Silke, you sure “did a lot of thinking about the matter” and I love it!!!
The clearer we understand this dynamic platform the more at ease and confident we can be. Your post is a gift to all substack authors anywhere!!!
Appreciate how you broke it down into chunks and kept expanding to cover questions that “we” your readers might have.
💯 and TY!!!
